A Transparent Vision: Jill Malek x Skyline Design Architectural Glass Collection
Posted by Julian Moran on
Introducing the Jill Malek for Skyline Design Architectural Glass Collection, an award-winning collaborative project that bridges the aesthetics of natural forms with the innovative use of architectural glass in commercial spaces. This collection represents a thoughtful fusion of our design philosophy with Skyline Design's expertise in glass manufacturing, aimed at enhancing indoor environments through the subtle interplay of light, texture, pattern and color.
Our partnership with Skyline Design, a leader in sustainable glass products, has culminated in a series of large-scale architectural glass pieces that draw upon patterns in nature. The collection brings to life four of our studio's original designs: "Sandstone", "Dune", "Tides" and "Cacti", each scaled and adapted to the unique medium of glass. While not the first time we have etched our designs into a transparent material, this venture into glass marks a new chapter for our studio, allowing us to explore how these natural-inspired, human-centered patterns can transform spaces on a larger scale.
The inspiration behind this collection stems from a long-held fascination with the organic shapes found in nature and urban environments alike. The decision to collaborate with Skyline was influenced by their commitment to both design innovation and functionality, aligning with our desire to see how our designs could interact with the properties of glass.
Adapting these designs to a new medium presented its own set of challenges, particularly in maintaining the integrity of color and scale on glass surfaces. This process was an exploration in itself, revealing new possibilities for our patterns and how they can contribute to the atmosphere of a space. A critical aspect of this was ensuring that the color palette remained both eye-catching and engaging, yet still subtly understated, to be able to harmonize with diverse environments that corporate and wellness offices often feature. Color and scale behave distinctly on glass compared to paper and wallcovering substrates, which forced us to undertake extensive experimentation to achieve the desired balance. This meticulous attention to hue and proportion was essential in preserving the essence of our designs while optimizing them for glass, ensuring they enhance spaces with their intended visual impact and emotional resonance.
Skyline Design has been an ideal partner, bringing decades of experience in glass manufacturing to the table. Their facility in Chicago, rooted in a history of innovation and sustainability, provided the perfect functional compliment for our vision. Together, we've created a collection that not only reflects our shared values but also showcases the potential of glass to enhance the built environment. This collaboration was further recognized by winning 1st place in the Product > Materials, Treatments + Surfaces (Including Paneling) category at the Best of Year Awards for Interior Design in 2023.
