Behind the Design: ALPENGLOW

In my design practice, we draw inspiration from the fluid forms found in natural and urban landscapes to create spaces that imbue a sense of tranquility and introspection. In May 2022, we released the Mystique Collection, featuring the ALPENGLOW pattern, which was inspired by the warm light that reflects off of a mountain during transitional moments of the day. Available in four different colorways: Earth, Garnet, Mica, and Topaz, this design is one of the centerpieces of the collection so we wanted to take a moment to dig a little deeper into the making of this product line and go behind the creation of the ALPENGLOW pattern.

For me, the inspiration for our latest Mystique Collection, and specifically for the ALPENGLOW design, came from my daily meditation practice. For over a year now, I have been meditating for a minimum of 20 minutes a day to help clear my mind, aid in focus, and gain clarity in both business and personal challenges. During one of these sessions, I kept envisioning an image of a mountain. Images of mountains, steady and unyielding, kept forming in my consciousness. I imagined myself flying towards mountainous ranges, ascending to their peaks. For me, mountains became a symbol of strength to which I aspired and provided an inner sense of calm and security. Thoughts of them—with their gracious majestic forms—filled me with warmth and awakened my spirit.

I translated this inspiration into the ALPENGLOW pattern, which is made up of many different fractals that connect and interplay with one another. Because most of my brand’s designs simultaneously illustrate colorful, expressive forms in nature while still remaining calm and subdued aesthetically, one of the challenges with this design was to ensure a natural color transition across the surface. It was important that the end result was an ethereal, non-repeating mural that added a sense of warmth and tranquility to any space it was placed in.
