Behind the Design(s): REEF | BLUES & COCOON | COAL

 

At the heart of our Dwellings Collection, two standout patterns—REEF | BLUES and COCOON | COAL—have captured the attention of designers and architects alike. Released in 2021, these patterns embody the organic beauty found in nature, transforming spaces into immersive environments. REEF | BLUES draws inspiration from the fluidity of underwater landscapes, with its deep blue and gray hues mimicking the gentle undulations of oceanic flora. Meanwhile, COCOON | COAL takes its cues from the protective, enveloping nature of animal cocoons, featuring a monochromatic design that combines crisp white lines with a dark, charcoal backdrop.

 

Both patterns offer a sophisticated interplay of movement and depth, making them versatile choices for a variety of interior settings, from modern commercial spaces to high-end residential environments. In this blog post, we explore the different ways these patterns have been used to enhance spaces, showcasing their adaptability and timeless appeal.

 

 

In this beautifully-designed Brooklyn townhouse in Crown Heights, the REEF | BLUES pattern finds a natural home, seamlessly complementing the blue cabinetry and the gold accents of the chandelier. The deep blue tones of the wallpaper echo the flowing forms of the chandelier, adding depth and cohesion to the space. The undulating lines of the pattern enhance the room’s serene atmosphere, creating a sense of calm that is both dynamic and balanced.

 

 

In Park City, Utah, Swoon Studio has designed an immersive powder room that fully embraces the soothing qualities of our COCOON | COAL wallcovering. By wrapping the walls and ceiling in this intricate pattern, the space is transformed into a tranquil retreat that echoes the protective and calming essence of natural cocoons. The monochromatic design, with its flowing lines and deep charcoal tones, enhances the modern finishes of the room, while the high ceilings allow the pattern to create a dynamic sense of movement and understated elegance. The result is a space that feels both enveloping and serene, offering a perfect balance between visual interest and subtle sophistication.

 

 

In Accenture's St. Petersburg office, the REEF | BLUES wallcovering serves as a striking mural accent that pairs seamlessly with the sleek glass doors and geometric ceiling grid, resulting in a cohesive, modern aesthetic. The flowing lines and deep hues of the mural enhance the natural light from the glass, while the soft, round pendant lights add warmth, balancing the space's energy. Designed by ASD | SKY, this installation highlights how REEF | BLUES can bring both understated sophistication and engaging vibrancy to a more formal, corporate setting.

 

 

For Amazon's Seattle HQ, we collaborated with FC Studio Inc to design an immersive environment using our COCOON | COAL pattern. The project seamlessly integrated art with functionality, enveloping the space in rich textures and vibrant tones. We also introduced a custom version of our COCOON | DIMENSIONAL FELT pattern in key areas, adding depth and color. In our “Azucena” project, our REEF | BLUES pattern was applied to the ceiling of a modern blue game room designed by Studio KT Design. This innovative use of the pattern was a first for us, and it helped to create a sophisticated, monochromatic look. By pairing the wallpaper with the room’s solid-colored walls, we highlighted the versatility of the design and added a chic, playful touch to the space. You can see more of this project here.

In this modern Californian home, the REEF | BLUES pattern is elevated with custom dimensional blue and gray sewn felt accents. The felt enhances the pattern's natural flow, wrapping seamlessly around the door to create a cohesive, tactile accent wall.

 

 

 

The COCOON | COAL pattern features beige felt accents sewn onto the wallpaper, highlighting and accentuating the organic motifs. This subtle addition enhances the depth and intricacy of the design, adding a layer of sophistication to the space.
