Creating a Cranberry & Creme Escape for a Modern Mountain Home
Posted by Jill Malek on
As one of the most charming, historic towns within New York’s scenic Hudson Valley, Rhinebeck has quickly become the destination of choice for many design-minded city-dwellers looking to leave the chaos of the Big Apple behind. Being that the Hudson Valley is one of my personal favorite places to escape to, I was excited for the opportunity to help create a special abode for someone else to enjoy as well.
When the client, Dichotomy Interiors approached us, they were looking for a custom-colored print to coordinate with the cranberry and cream finishes in one of the bedrooms of the home. They also mentioned to us that the pattern had to be a soft transition from inside to out, imbuing its occupants with a sense of peace and calm as they gaze upon the beautiful outdoor scenery from their window. Right from our initial discussions, I had a feeling our MELT pattern would be exactly what they were looking for - the only question was however, "in what shade?"
Like many other projects, but especially so for this location, color-matching was the key challenge of this project. Skew the colors towards brown and you’re left with too bland a result; adjust them too much towards pink and you’ve lost the subtle richness of the cranberry tones.
After a series of edits and revisions, we were able to successfully match the pattern’s rings to the desired shade, creating a cohesive oscillation of color. Once the hues were balanced, we needed to position the motif very specifically and centrally, so as to not lose too much information in the areas where the cutouts for the windows were.
Looking back the project now that everything has been completed, I am really proud of how wallcovering came together with the rest of the bedroom. Working with Dichotomy Interiors was an amazing experience and I’m honored to have gotten to be a part of such a wonderful project. I love how the pattern looks and how the client’s yard serves as a wonderful backdrop. I can only imagine how beautiful it must be to wake up everyday in such a soothing space!
