Honoring While Elevating: Using 3 of Our Wallcoverings for this Timeless Fifth Avenue Loft
Posted by Julian Moran on
Working on this 5th Avenue Loft for Framework Architecture and designer Tamara Hubinsky was a true exercise in blending modernity with timeless elegance. For this residential space, we were honored to provide our COCOON | COAL, COCOON | CHARCOAL, and MIGRATION | BLUE NIGHT wallcoverings, enhancing key areas with these distinct patterns.
The homeowners, Dorie and Ari Paparo, sought an interior that would speak to the architectural nuances of their space—particularly the stunning, curved windows—while creating a harmonious blend of bold design choices and functional living areas. Each space, from the inviting entryway to the cozy library corner and serene bedroom, was designed to exude character while maintaining a sense of calm and sophistication.
At the heart of this project was a desire to create texture and movement that would enhance the space's natural light and structure. To achieve this, the design team selected a combination of wallcoverings that would flow seamlessly from one room to the next while allowing each area its own unique voice.
The entryway, with its grand arched windows, called for a statement piece that would mirror the space’s architectural curves. Our COCOON | COAL provided the perfect solution. Its deep charcoal background, accented by fluid white lines, mimicked the soft curves of the windows while offering a bold contrast to the neutral tones of the surrounding decor.
Extending this pattern into the adjacent "library" area created a cohesive flow, ensuring that the design didn’t feel disconnected between rooms. The repetition of the pattern throughout these spaces tied the entryway to the rest of the loft, allowing the architectural elements to shine without competing for attention.
In the den, where natural light is more limited, the clients were initially hesitant to use wallpaper. However, our COCOON | CHARCOAL offered the perfect balance of light and contrast. As a near inverse of the entry’s COCOON | COAL, its swirling charcoal lines on a crisp white background brightened the space while maintaining a cohesive feel. This contrast added energy to the room, enhancing the colorful furniture and decor, while giving the space structure without sacrificing its playful, dynamic feel.
The bedroom called for something serene—a sanctuary where the homeowners could retreat at the end of the day. The choice of MIGRATION | BLUE NIGHT was particularly meaningful, as the pattern itself was born from a moment of reflection and calm at the end of long days. Inspired by Jill's experience of watching birds make rhythmic, synchronized movements in the sky at dusk, the pattern captures the essence of soft, meditative motion—a moment to pause and reflect. Similarly, for this bedroom, the wallpaper creates a space for the homeowners to retreat and unwind after their day. With its dramatic placement opposite the room’s grand arch window, the deep blue tones ground the space, while the delicate bird motif evokes a sense of fluidity and calm. Paired with soft pink bedding, the wallpaper serves as both a statement piece and a neutral backdrop, offering a soothing yet sophisticated atmosphere. It’s fitting that this was the first wallcovering the homeowners fell in love with, setting the tone for the rest of the home’s design.
Overall, the use of these patterns allowed us to weave a consistent story throughout the loft while letting each space maintain its individuality. The architectural features of the loft were enhanced, not overshadowed, by the wallcoverings, demonstrating the power of well-selected patterns to elevate a space. We are honored to have been a part of this transformation and hope the Paparos continue to find comfort and joy in their beautifully designed home for years to come.
